I haven't had much time for shooting lately but last weekend I finally made it out to the Twin Otter for some photos. These small planes are used for flying all around Antarctica. This particular one is based at South Pole and flies from here out to the field camps that are within several hundred miles.

A couple of days ago the second overland traverse from McMurdo Station, on the Ross Ice Shelf, to South Pole Station, in the center of the continent, arrived bringing us 83,000 gallons of fuel. They came with 8 of these huge tractors and made the trip in 29 days.

We're getting ready to tear all of the plants out of the greenhouse in order to sterilize everything and start the food growing for the winter-over crew. The first thing to go was this huge hibiscus which is now sitting in a bucket in the hallway. I can't bear the thought of them all being thrown away....

It was a beautiful night last night to go for a walk with -25F temps and very little wind. A perfect night for taking photos and skiing. The beautiful light here never ceases to amaze me and while there is a bit of junk around the station, I do love that most of it is so colorful. And never a place without a sense of humor, we now have our own 'Spool Henge'.

We're getting ready to tear everything out of the greenhouse soon so that all the trays can be cleaned and maintenance performed on the system. Lisbon was so colorful, it was hard to resist shooting in color themes. My favorites of course were the yellows, but there was plenty of vibrant red to go around too...

When I first heard about the Bone Church I never really imagined that it would be made up of SO many bones. The outside of the building was this really beautiful, serene place. Then you step through the entrance and bones everywhere! It was more than a little creepy, but also fascinating, in that train-wreck kind of way that insists you keep looking.

The one thing I really miss at South Pole are plants. For the most part, this somewhat desolate place is flat, white and without color. Many days there is not even a horizon on which to settle your eyes, for the gray sky simply blends into snow.  But thankfully we have a small hydroponic greenhouse. I haven't slept much at South Pole, generally only 2-3 hours a night since I arrived here last week. I took these while in Evora, Portugal last month. On the edge of the little town there is a small university with grounds that are more like a large public garden. These are a few more dahlia photos taken in the Madrid Botanic Gardens. I spent nearly a whole day there and several hours just in the dahlia flower beds. They had an incredibly varied collection with the most brilliant colors. Dahlias will definitely be on my garden list for next year....

Yesterday I flew from McMurdo to South Pole Station, Antarctica. In case you've ever wondered what Antarctic taxis, airports or runways look like, here are a few photos. Walking through the stands of Aspen trees on my way down from work yesterday was magical with all the trees turning a multitude of fall shades in lime greens, vibrant yellows and mellow oranges. I harvested a basil today from a plant that was out of control and the size of a shrub.  This is one of my favorite plants because it's not only pretty but it's yummy.  And it self seeds all over my little garden so there are always a lot of little basil surprises in the spring.

We grew our first hops plants this year and today we harvested them. It's a pretty plant, fast growing and great for shade.  Not to mention that if you brew your own beer you get the added bonus of having your own hops...

Exciting things are happening with our peanut plants!  I'm glad I didn't read up on growing peanuts earlier or I wouldn't have been so pleasantly surprised at what's happening with our peanut plants right now.  Apparently, once the plant flowers, it sends a little part of the flower down into the soil to make a peanut.  You can see the little purple stems growing downward from the spent flower.

Done and done! This little project took about 6 months when I initially thought it would only take 1-2 weeks. Approximately 3,000 postage stamps later (mostly vintage from about 30 different countries)  the great bike collage project of 2011 is finally done.  Admittedly, it's a bit overly pink, but I love it anyway.  I've been wanting to do some larger projects and this fit the bill perfectly.

While in Spain & Morocco I shot a lot of the old ornate street lamp posts, outdoor wall lamps and a few of the intricate lamps found in the buildings of Morocco.  I love to shoot street lamps so it was a pleasant surprise to find some many on our trip. Have a great weekend! Andrea

In keeping with my Spain theme for the week...  These are photos I took in Madrid a couple of weeks ago. I spotted this old Yost typewriter on a little bottom-shelf cubby hole in an antique shop while wandering through the old town of Ronda, Spain a couple of weeks ago.  From 1912, this machine speaks to an age of elegance, hand-forged communications and beautiful design.

Today I went photo traipsing with my friend Amy through the Denver Botanic Gardens.  We were both shooting TtV and explored every nook & cranny of the gardens. Hubdude recently returned from Antarctica and picked up a bag of stamps for me in New Zealand on his way through.  Most of these I hadn't encountered yet so it was nice to get new ones.  In the mix was one lone Thailand stamp.  I like stamps from New Zealand & Australia because they typically tend to be more colorful than many other countries.

I just found out that the historic pedestrian tunnel underneath Union Station in downtown Denver is closing for good on February 1st.  I made a last trip down there this morning to take some photographs and was a little disappointed to find that construction workers were already readying the place for destruction. I started a series of small mixed media collages a couple weeks back and am just now finally finishing them.  They're based on a set of old black & white photos that I found in Portland last month.

Well, this post isn't really about Indonesia, but I rarely ever come across postage stamps from Indonesia- this is only the first or second one I'm gotten out of close to 50,000 stamps.  I don't know why.  But I got married there and it's an incredible country, so it's a special place to me and I love seeing a stamp from Indo. I just love the graphics this next set.

In the spring I picked up a Kodak Baby Brownie Special camera for about $2 on eBay.  The listing was about 3 words long and I had no idea if the camera would work, but for $2 it was worth the risk.
