Only the Size of the Trees Have Changed....

But we're still chopping down old growth forests. I saw this old postcard at the antique book & paper fair that I went to a couple of weeks ago and couldn't leave it behind. It's a good reminder for me that sometimes we do things to the environment that simply can't be undone.

Antique Postcards

I recently went to an antique book & paper fair held in Denver and found some great antique postcards with flowers. As I also collect stamps, I love that several of these have stamps and postal cancellations that are almost a century old.

The 'out with the old, in with the new' theme of this first postcard is what attracted my attention as the little gnome seems to be trying to deadhead the 1906 flower to make room for the 1907 flower.

This postcard was sent to a local address- 3029 Vine St. in June of 1917. I thought it might be neat to see if this house still existed so I took a short excursion today and found it.

New Postcards from Postcrossing

I received a few postcards in the mail this week and thought I would share my favorites.

This first one is from Chrome- the bike people in San Fransisco. They had this program going on a few weeks ago where if you sent them an old beat up pair of shoes, they would send you a free pair of Chrome shoes. So I sent them some old kicks and got new ones in the mail, plus this cool postcard.

This is my favorite postcard that came this week. This came from someone in Hong Kong. I love it's colorful quirkiness. Now I want a bike helmet with birds coming out of it.

This postcard is a painting of the Neva river in St. Petersburg. If you've ever read any Russian literature, then you've heard of the great Neva river.

This last one is from China. China was such a great country to travel through- I'm fascinated by the country and can't wait to go back someday. And this postcard looks weirdly similar to the Neva one above it, no?

Vintage Postcard and Postcrossing

I recently signed up for Postcrossing- which is a website where you can sign up to send and receive postcards with total strangers from all over the world.  As they explain it on their site:
The goal of this project is to allow people to receive postcards from all over the world, for free. Well, almost free! The main idea is that: if you send a postcard, you will receive at least one back from a random Postcrosser from somewhere in the world.
Why? Because, like the author, there are lots of people who like to receive real mail.
The element of surprise of receiving postcards from different places in the world (many of which you probably have never heard of) can turn your mailbox into a box of surprises - and who wouldn't like that?
Today I received my first postcard, which would have been great all by itself, but it's a lovely vintage postcard!  Which makes it all the better.  (And coincidentally, it comes from Dixon, California.  Which happens to be my last name. )  Isn't this a great postcard??

So far, I've sent 5 postcards but I have 3 more going out to Russia, Croatia and Lithuania. I don't know which is more fun- sending or receiving them. I've been sending Colorado postcards but I'm getting ready to make my own and will start sending those soon.

If you like mail, postcards and being nice to strangers, then Postcrossing might be for you and perhaps we'll be lucky enough to cross postcard paths someday.
